OCZ Vertex 4 SSD with 128GB – The benchmark

Standard

Today we present you the 128 GB version of the OCZ Vertex 4 (find it here). If the fourth generation can take the lead in the solid state drive market, you will learn in this article.

Introduction to the OCZ Vertex 4

OCZ has long been the benchmark hardware in the segment of memory. They’re Vertex 2 and Vertex 3 was mostly moving in the midfield. The new OCZ Vertex 4 will now may do a u-turn and catapult the memory manufacturer to the top again. In this test, we will look at the 128 GB version more closely.

The 128GB OCZ Vertex 4 is supposed to be the flagship of OCZ. So it is not a low-budget entry-level SSD. Special features of this SSD is the MLC Solid State Drive Flash Memory, SATA III (6 Gbps) connection, TRIM support, and Indilinx Infused.

This flash memory as lately from OCZ is delivered in a “to small” packaging. It looks like the hardware has been „crammed“ in the package.

Otherwise the packaging includes a 3.5 „adapter and mounting hardware screws, so that the drive can be directly built in a tower case.

The Vertex 4 needs twice as much power, 1.3 watts, like a traditional notebook hard drive. This is because it has a large cache of 1GB, which was distributed over two DRAM chips.

Test method of the OCZ Vertex 4

To give you a clue of the SSD-power we did our test with different kind of tools.
A list of all tools which we use for our tests can be find here on our site.

The Conclusion

The OCZ Vertex 4 shows two different faces in these tests. In the AS SSD total score all factors plays very well together, so it is now by far the number 1 in our ranking. 881 points is quite an impressive number, considering that the second place goes to Crucial with 784 points. The other face of the SSD comes up in the other tests. Here the Vertex 4 is not playing in the high-level range. Who puts much emphasis on the 4K-64 test should definitely grab this SSD. Anyone looking for a balanced drive with higher reading and writing speeds, should rather go to the other manufactorers such as Kingston or Crucial.
