How to find SSD failures – SMART

Solid state drives, SSDs beats more and more the traditional hard drives from the top. But they aren’t so perfect as they seem.
One example – A SSD got only a certain number of writes before individual cells get damaged. But there are ways to check-up SSDs see problems before they happen. The magicword is SMART-SelfMonitoringAnalysis and ReportingTechnology.

SMART wrights a sort of diary for the flash drive, in which you can see for example how strong individual cells are already damaged. How to get to this „diary“ is explained in the following.

Who needs a specific tool for a SSD from a manufacturer can download it in the most cases from the website of the manufacturer. In the case of Samsung for example it is the software „Magician“.

Ofcourse you can get tools by other developers in the internet. But this tools aren’t in most of our tested cases so precise like the tools from the manufacturer themselves.
