Prefetch – How to deactivate it when using a SSD

In this article we are going to show you, why you can deactivate the „Prefetchfunction“ from Windows if you are using a SSD and how to deactivate it.

The Prefetcher is analyzing the startup behavior of programs. Frequently used data are shifted by the system so, that you can start and use them faster. This don’t bring any benefit if you are using a SSD and even can slow down the system and the startup.

 

Deactivating Prefetch

Step 1:

To deactivate Prefetch click on the windows startbutton (1) and write “regedit” in the searchfield (2). Click on “regedit.exe” to start the registration (3).

Step 2:

Navigate on the left side to the key

“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters”  (1), double click the entry “EnablePrefetcher” (2) an set in the new windoe the value on “0”  (3). For the last step click on “OK” to confirm your settings.

Now you have only to start your computer new and the settings will be confirmed by the system.
